Buenos Aires, the capital and cultural heart of Argentina, is located along
the southeastern coast of South America. During the second half of the 19th
century, with the construction of the railroad throughout the country,“Buenos Aires” became a multi-cultural city that ranked with other major
European capitals. A well-known monument and figure that was constructed
during this time period was the Colon Theater. This theater soon became one
of the world’s top venues within the city’s main avenues, built during the
late 19th century and early 20th century. Along with the great architecture
of the theater, some of the first tallest buildings of South America were
built throughout Buenos Aires, followed by the first subway network. Due to
its extensive cultural characteristics and architectural feats for the time,
the city was a favored destination for immigrants from Europe throughout the
1920s. Therefore, it is no surprise that the city is strongly influenced by
European culture and is often referred to as the “Paris of South America.”
Throughout the city one will find museums representing the fine arts, the modern arts, the decorative arts, the popular arts, the sacred arts, the theatre and popular music. Well-preserved homes of famous writers and artists can be found spread out through the city, providing enlightenment for those pursuing the arts. Libraries are also in abundance throughout Buenos Aires, with botanical gardens and well-landscaped parks found in contrast. Buenos Aires is also the home to a world famous Zoo and Botanical Garden providing a tranquil place for those who are eager to see the relaxing side of the city.
Belgrano is an upper-middle class neighborhood located near the modern and trendy Palermo. The heart of this neighborhood pulses with life on its main thoroughfare, Avenida Cabildo, which carries automobile traffic, and features corn cafès, grocery stores, movie theaters, specialty shops, clothing boutiques, bookstores, and other retail venues. On Manuel Belgrano square, a local artisan fair is held regularly and becomes especially vibrant on weekends.The beauty of this city is only enhanced by the possibilities of weekend excursions that are all accessible by public transportation. El Tigre, Mataderos and Tomas Jofre, are only some examples of beautiful places located outside of the city that allow you to escape the hustle and bustle when needed.
